How to make the coziest handmade blankets and home decor
We all love blankets. Homemade blankets are charming, and for me, they are priceless. I carry around the same fleece blanket in the last 16 years.
I made it; I wants it. It’s my precious.
When I make a blanket, I feel like it’s the coziest thing on earth. Plus, DIY blankets are the perfect gift and easy to make.
Depends on your comfort level, you can choose a no-sew blanket tutorial, or if you are comfortable with a more advanced technic you can find crocheted, knitted, and quilted blanket ideas in this post.
Before we see the best homemade blankets of the season…
Let’s talk about blanket sizes.
-
- Baby: 30″ x 40″
- Crib: 36′ x 52″
- Throw: 50″ x 65″
- Twin: 70″ x 90″
- Double or Full: 85″ x 108″
- Queen: 90″ x 108″
- King: 110″ 108″
This simple chart includes the most common blanket sizes and helps you to plan how much yarn or material you’ll need to make a cozy blanket.
But use it as a guideline and alternate it when you want to.
There are times when I know I have enough material, and I design the blanket in the process, which results in different sizes, colors, and textures.
All right. Let’s start with an easy DIY blanket idea.
No-sew fleece tie blanket tutorial
Fleece is a very forgiving material. Easy to wash and the perfect material to make no-sew throw blanket.
Do you remember my 16 years old fleece blanket? I dragged it with me through countries and many states, and the blanket just won’t die on me.
No wonder that Aileen chose to DIY this cute double fleece blanket for her child.
She used the tie technic to create cute edges and finished her project in a couple of hours.
The other advantages of fleece tie blankets are that you don’t need a sewing machine to make it and easy to wash it on a regular cycle following with tumble dry.
Don’t you have fleece blankets you can repurpose? No problem. There are affordable no-sew fleece blanket kits you can purchase on Amazon or at the Hobby Lobby.
DIY Fleece & Fur Blanket
In the cold winter, you might need more than one light thin throw blanket. You want something warm and fluffy.
Here is the ultimate soft blanket that everybody is gonna fight for in your home. It is made out of fleece and soft faux fur.
It’s the perfect sewing project for beginners. You’ll need a few basic supplies and a sewing machine. But luckily, Alicea from chickenscratchny.com will walk you through the process.
Knit or crochet a blanket
Yarns have been around for “ages”… For a long time.
There are so many different textures and colors nowadays, which means its perfect for us crafters. We can make cozy crocheted blankets from chunky yarn or chenille yarn.
This beginner crochet blanket from mynourishedhome.com is perfect for you if you are just starting with crocheting and looking for an easy crochet pattern to follow.
Probably you are the same age as me and remember those good times when you sat down with your grandma to learn how to knit and crochet.
If you said yes… you know an easy crochet pattern is perfect for teaching your child to appreciate DIY, spend some quality time with you, and put down the electronics.
The pattern is simple, and it works with every type of yarn. Hint… I love love love the Bernat yarn. It is super soft, and you can use the leftovers for making pom-poms for rugs or decor pillows.
Hand-knitted chenille yarn blanket
OMG. I made this cozy and super warm blanket a few weeks ago. I love it! Most importantly I loved the process. It was done under 1 hour and I needed no tools for it, only my hands.
Check out the easiest tutorial ever.

Repurposed quilt blankets
You know I try to upcycle everything and use it as new home decor.
Look around in the closets and storage. I’m sure you’ll find some old denim, sweaters, bedsheets, curtains, scarfs, etc.
Now, you are ready to give them a new life and repurpose them into a cozy picnic blanket.
The upcycled old sweater blanket from Claire at pillarboxblue.com is quilted by using the hexagon pattern, and she has a detailed tutorial.
It is the perfect addition to my sweater pillowcases. I think I will give it a try too.
Another great idea is upcycling different colors of denim and make a quilt picnic blanket. You might never put those old jeans on, but don’t want to throw them away either? Check out Sonja and Jane’s tutorial on how to DIY a checkered denim blanket.
Weighted Blanket DIY
We know that weighted blankets can be beneficial for those who have trouble sleeping.
It has been said that it also helps people and children with special needs since it feels like a firm hug. Depends on the weight of the filler, you have lighter or stronger pressure, which helps to fall asleep.
I looked around the net, and weighted blankets aren’t cheap. A good size (twin or bigger) starts at $60, and rapidly climbing depends on the size and the weight of the blanket.
So I’ve been thinking, can we make our own with snuggly soft material and weighted filler? Thankfully the answer is yes.
Even better, if you have a fleece or faux fur blanket already at home, you can turn it into a cozy weighted blanket in less than an hour.
Blanket display ideas
Everybody must love blankets.
I can’t stop looking at those amazing photos with gazillion beautiful blankets on IG. So many different textures and rooms perfectly displayed.
Plus, I assume after these 9 cute DIY throw projects, you have at least 4 cozy blankets, and now you need ideas where to display them and how to use them as a couch decoration.
So I got a couple of cool and cheap ideas for you to consider.
Make a ladder from driftwood and reclaimed wood
The easiest and cheapest idea is to grab some leftover wood from other home decor projects and use it to make a vertical blanket holder, a.k.a a blanket ladder.
Since we live next to the beach, I got the privilege to make the ladder even more rustic and collect some driftwood.
It doesn’t matter which idea you like better both of them work great, and it is an easy upcycling project.
For the driftwood, ladder check out Sonja’s tutorial: https://sustainmycrafthabit.com/diy-blanket-ladder-with-driftwood/
For the wood chalk painted blanket ladder Vioneta has the perfect tutorial for you: https://www.thehandymansdaughter.com/diy-blanket-ladder/
Around Christmas time, it can be a cute display for the stockings too.
Laundry baskets for blankets and pillow storage
There is nothing better than finding cute blanket storage for a couple of dollars. I got this woven rope storage basket under $20, and I love it.
Laundry baskets are coming in so many different shapes and made out of different materials.
They are a perfect addition to any home decor. No matter if you like bohemian, eclectic, rustic, modern, or farmhouse look, you’ll find the perfect storage basket for your blankets and pillows.
Display your blankets on the couch
Did you know there are mistakes you can do when displaying blankets on the sofa? I didn’t know. I always assumed I just make it look like it is thrown there looks cool.
For me, the 1st half of the picture always makes more sense. It gives me a cozier feeling. Plus, I don’t like the look of a perfectly folded blanket on the couch, as the 2nd picture illustrates.
Anyway, if you want to see the “science” on how to display your blanket in the living room, check out this cute post.
Recap of the best handmade blanket ideas and how to decorate with them
If you wondered what is the origin of those pictures on the internet with a bunch of blankets. Or is there a reason why we have so many different textures? Like quilted, chunky yarn, faux fur or fleece.
I hope you found the answer. Simply we love blankets, and they are easy to DIY.
Crochet, fleece, faux fur is perfect for cuddling in and having a nice cup of hot cocoa during a movie night.
Quilted denim and stronger materials are great to set up a picnic area outdoors with your family and friends.
Throw blankets in every size can be added to your home decor too. The possibilities are endless no matter what style, color, shape, and texture you like.
