How to Make a Boho Bean Bag Chair with a Little Twist
This cool boho bean bag chair is one of my favorite DIY. I was killing time on Pinterest one day, and I found this weird pyramid bean bag with a twist. It looked so cozy, and I imagined having a bean bag at our rustic corner where I can read or play with the dogs.
Things to make out of old curtains
Think about it! You can save money if you already have the material at home. An old curtain might be boring… you’ve been looking at it for years on the windows. BUT they can be upcycled into a cozy pyramid bean bag.Â

Needed supplies for making a pyramid bean bag
-
- 2 or 3 yards of fabric. I upcycled my old curtain for the cover because it got the boho vibe with pom pom trim. If you like boho style, check out this durable fabric.
- Â 2 or 3 yards of light fabric for the liner. (Optional) If you want to wash the bean bag cover from time to time, your best bet is to make a liner too. Medium-weight fabrics work great for the bean bag liner.
- Zipper for the bean bag cover.
- 3 packs of bean bag chair refill (100 Liter refill bags), or upcycle leftover cushions as I did. (You’ll see in the tutorial section.)
- Sewing machine, I love my Brother sewing machine. It was inexpensive and worked great with different fabrics.
- Thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Pom pom trim (optional)
How much does it cost?
It was a complete upcycle project and FREE of cost. If you follow my tips below, you can make it for free.
- Find an old curtain or fabric in your junk closet.
- I saw people making bean bags from old sweaters or jeans, so let go of your imagination. If you have no fabric, probably you can use those old jeans nobody in your family uses anymore.
- Get the zipper from an old jacket.
- If you want pom poms on your bean bag, you can make your own from leftover yarn.
Step by Step Pyramid Bean Bag Tutorial
So how to make a bean bag chair out of old curtains?
Grab those old curtains in the house, look for a pyramid bean bag chair pattern (spoiler alert it is just a rectangle shape twisted on the top short side).
Use leftover cushions as a bean bag filling alternative.
1. Prepare the bean bag chair filler.
We had leftover 5″ cushions from our reading nook project. They were getting to my nerves and collecting dust in the corner for weeks, but hey “El que guarda siempre tiene” Rough translation: The one who saves always has.
I was able to save money by not buying bean bag fillers!
Let me help you decide what kind of filler you want to use.
Bean bag chair filling alternatives:
- You can use scrap fabrics if you have a lot at home. They won’t be fluffy and soft, and I think they are perfect for a durable boho floor cushion or pouf.
- Shredded memory foam for a cozy and fluffy bean bag. I love these memory foams! They are made in the US and are perfect for bean bag projects.
- Traditional bean bag fillers. They are still cozy, but not as fluffy as the foam. I made my a giant bean bag with these fillers, and I feel like it that you have to add some bags to it cause they wear out after a while.
If you have cushions at home, all you need to do is to cut, pinch and tear the cushion into little pieces.
Once the bean bag filler is ready, you can move on to the next step.
2. DIY your bean bag liner
Since I used 70″ X 72″ curtains, I simply folded the fabric in half. That gave me a 36″ wide and 70″ long material. If you want it smaller, adjust my measurements. You want to keep at least 1.5″ on the sides so you can sew them together.
- Fold the fabric in half. Secure the seams together with the pins.
- Sew the long and one of the short sides together.
- After you sew the seams together, take the open end and fold it perpendicular to the stitched short seam.
- Line up the pieces, so the long side seams are laying on top of each other.
- Sew them together but leave a little hole where you’re going to put the filler in.
- Pour in the fillers.
- When all fillers are in, and you think it is cushiony enough, you can finish and sew the hole too.
Your pyramid bean bag liner is done!
3. Sew the boho bean bag cover.
- The bean bag cover will be removable for washing. Because it will be taken on and off and washed, you want to finish the edges of the fabric to prevent fraying.
- Fold the fabric in half. Secure the seams together with the pins.
- Sew one of the short sides together.
- Sew the zipper on the long side.
- After the seams are sewn, take the open end and fold it perpendicular to the stitched short seam.
- Line up the pieces, so the long side seams are laying on top of each other.
- Keep sawing the zipper into the short side.
All right! The boho bean bag project is done!
Pyramid bean bag cair DIY
It was fun, and I hope you’ll enjoy making a cozy bean bag for your reading corner soon.
If you can use materials, you already have at home. I’m all about repurposing old junk and make new cute home decor.
Sewing a bean bag chair is an easy project. I’m a beginner when it comes to sewing, and probably you are too. Luckily you’re gonna be able to finish this project in less than 2 hours using simple stitches on your sewing machine.
BUT if you feel you need a little more visual help to get comfortable with sewing a funky bean bag, check out this excellent sewing tutorial.

PS: I found these measurements comfortable for me, but I’m not that tall. My husband, on the other hand, would not fit on it. I would state with current measurements of an average woman, or any kid can enjoy a cozy movie night on this pyramid bean bag.
I would love to know how your DIY bean bag turned out. Please let me know in the comments below.
Happy, creative day!
Super fun project!! Thanks for sharing!

This is great!! I’m going to put my husband to work to make me one! I love this so much!
Tina, it is the weekend after all. Put your hubby to DIY this cozy bean bag. I hope it will turn out as comfortable as my boho bean bag chair. 😉
Love the reused angle!
WOW! I love this! Making this would save me so much money since I was actually looking at buying 2 for my boys.
Think about it, Ashley! If you have old blankets or curtain or bed sheets you can upcycle those and save money on material.
