Impressive color combinations with mustard yellow in your home

Are you looking for ideas to spice up your home decor with modern colors? Adding mustard yellow to any room in your house can be your answer.

If you like a bold statement and glowing styles, then adding a little mustard may be just what you need to redecorate this year.

If you are like me and not a fan of the yellow, stop for a second and give a chance to this warm, golden yellow tone. You might be surprised how many different styles can be combined with mustard.

No matter if your house’s style is bohemian, modern, or eclectic, this warm, rich hue of yellow will add a fresh pop of color to your home.

What colors compliment mustard yellow?

You might wonder what color goes good with mustard yellow.

  1. It brings warmth to a white room. It can be paired with black, navy, and dark grey.
  2. It can tone down colorful bohemian rooms filled with teal, turquoise, coral, and blue.
  3. Or it can add playful vibes to pastels, like light grey, light blue, peach, rose gold.
  4. You can even add mustard yellow to earth-toned neutrals, like beige and different shades of brown.

what goes with mustard color

This room is such a great demonstration of how many colors you can combine with a little bit of mustard yellow.

At the left of the picture, there is a distressed, painted metal locker — a mix of dark grey and rusty brown. Then there is a rose gold paper bin and lampshade in the office.

The mustard yellow office chair and crocheted ottoman is just the perfect pop of color to this office. They really give a playful addition, so you don’t feel depressed by the black wall, lamp, and table legs.

Different shades of grey on the wall, office table, shelves. Crocheted light grey ottoman and dark grey duvet set compensate each other very well in the “bedroom.”

The yellow pictures and OMG! the yellow rims on the bicycle is just perfect. To complete the look, earth-toned are added too. Wood floor lamp, beige pillow, and terracotta planters. You see, not a lot of yellow, but enough to give a playful charm to this room.

DIY home decor tips with mustard yellow

I love to DIY. Most importantly, I love to make new home decor on a dime. Here are some ideas on how you can add a pop of mustard yellow to your home.

Mustard yellow accent wall

It is definitely much cheaper if you paint the wall. Plus, no strangers are making a mess in your house.

I think the mustard yellow color is such a statement I will only paint one wall. It is so sophisticated and modern with white walls, lamps, and planters arrangement.

How to make mustard yellow color

I’m not sure if I would play around trying to mix the perfect tone for my wall since Home Depot and other department stores have the ideal service to mix colors for you.

BUT just in case you are adventurous and want to come up with the perfect mustard shade, you need to mix 6 parts yellow, 2 parts orange, and 1 part brown.

Not up to painting? Do you like wallpapers? You can choose a cool textured one in your favorite color.

  2. If you have an old yellow sweater, you can upcycle it into a lampshade
  3. Handknit a blanket from a chunky mustard yellow yarn.
  4. Dress up a decorative pillowcase with mustard yellow pom-poms.

Mustard yellow living room ideas

You know probably a whole accent wall painted yellow is overwhelming.

I did that once in my first apartment, and I loved it for a few weeks. BUT after a while, I felt to go back to simple, clean white walls. Boring, I know.

Well, let’s see some great ideas to add a pop of color to a neutral living room.

yellow and grey room ideas

Paired with neutral colors, this small living room corner is perfect for grabbing a book and relaxing.

I love the combination of the white walls and the geometric design on the throw blanket and the planters.

The light beige wood futon frame gives a warm feeling to this room, and the decorative mustard yellow pillows and pouf are the perfect addition to this clean pastel reading corner.

Mustard yellow accent chair and lamps

Another great idea of how not to go overboard with bold colors in your living room.

If you have a huge dark grey or black furniture you can pair it with mustard yellow lamps, vase, and a cute chair.

Dark grey and yellow go well together, and none of them is too much in this room. Dark is not too depressing, and the yellow doesn’t yell into your face. 🙂

Mustard yellow and navy blue kitchen

These two colors are in perfect harmony in a modern kitchen. To give a finished look for a vibrant kitchen, get some yellow, navy, and white chairs too.

Navy and yellow have been paired forever in the fashion industry, and they look lovely together on kitchen cabinets too.

You can consider other shades of blue too. Probably I can’t name 50 shades but think about royal blue, light blue, pastel, and denim blue or even vibrant turquoise.

BUT, if you think that the mustard yellow color would be an overkill for your kitchen cabinets, don’t worry, you still can incorporate this vibrant color in the dining room and kitchen area.

Use small yellow accessories like plates, mats, table cloths, vase, or table centerpiece with flowers to add a pop of color. We all spend a lot of time in this area, and adding a little mustard yellow makes the place happier and warmer.

Mustard bedroom decor

It doesn’t matter which room you want to warm up a little with colors; you can use yellow in every room in the house.

If you like a lot of mustard in the bedroom, go ahead and replace your duvet covers and pair it with a neutral beige chair or ottoman.

Add a pastel or warm off-white carpet to make it even cozier. You can replace the lampshades to a warm yellow color too.

I personally love my denim blue bedsheet set and wanted to keep it. So I decided to pair it with boho black & white pillows and blanket and added mustard yellow pom-poms to them.

Frontdoor with a pop of yellow color

If you are lucky enough to live in one of these charming brick row houses, you can brighten up the entrance with mustard yellow painted door.

I love how the owner of this house kept the bricks and painted the door and window frames white.

BTW this warm yellow looks great with white or light grey walls too, so don’t be afraid to try it.

Colorful Porch and backyard decor

If you live in a warmer climate like us, you can be outside all the time. If it is winter now where you are, don’t worry, it’ll get warm soon, and you can remodel your backyard.

Why not use a little mustard yellow on the porch or patio? With a little spray paint, you can give a quick makeover to the patio chairs.

Mustard Yellow plants and planters

Did you know there is a large selection of flowers with a warm yellow hue?

I love gardening, and here are my favorites: Marigold, roses, tulips, calla, daisy, hibiscus, begonia, sunflower, black-eyed Susan.

You’ll find different flowers every season, and my favorite decoration is to make a beautiful centerpiece with them at the dining table or console.

If you feel more adventurous, you can make a yellow bird feeder or make unique creative planters for your indoor or outdoor plants.

Final Mustard Yellow Tips and Home Decorating Ideas

  • The best advice I can give you is to start with something small. You can add yellow pom-poms to pillows, an ottoman or pouf, candle holders, lamps in the living room, and bedroom. Plates and mats in the kitchen and dining room.  Most of these accessories can be DIY, and you don’t have to break the bank either.

  • Pale mustard yellow is soft and won’t make a huge statement in your home decor. Probably you want to start with more delicate color.

  • Strong mustard tones can be overwhelming. Remember when I said my yellow accent wall was too much for me after a few weeks? Instead of intense color, you can start painting the walls in soft tones.

  • It combines well with almost every color — Rosegold and pale pink, navy blue, and denim blue. For a boho look, you can combine it with green and purple, and for a modern look with white gray and black.
